Struga is a town on the northern shore of Lake Ohrid, in the south-west of North Macedonia, at the point where the Black Drin river flows out of the lake towards Albania. It shares the lakefront with Ohrid, a short distance to the south-east, and the river running through its centre, crossed by bridges and lined with promenades, gives the town much of its identity.
Struga is best known for the Struga Poetry Evenings, an international poetry festival founded in 1961 that brings poets from around the world each summer and lends the town the nickname of a "city of poetry". Away from the festival, it is a quieter, more local place than its larger neighbour — a working lakeside town with an agricultural hinterland on the surrounding Struga field, rather than a resort built mainly around visitors. The Bridge of Poetry over the river, the lakefront and the market form its everyday centre, with villages and beaches lining the shore in both directions.
Property here ranges from apartments in and around the centre, including newer developments, to family houses in the residential streets and surrounding villages and plots out on the Struga field. Proximity to the lake and river is a natural draw, with stock aimed both at year-round living and, as in any lakeside town, at holiday or seasonal-letting use. The seasonal rhythm of the shore and the value placed on lake views are worth weighing, and title and boundaries should be checked carefully.
